Like seemingly every person in the United States (and many abroad) I’ve been thinking a lot about the murder of Michael Brown after the ruling came down that Wilson would not have to stand trial. I’ve read the court documents, I’ve watched every video, I’ve researched all of the evidence available to the trial. There are a myriad of things ways in which Wilson’s testimony is inconsistent, contradicts evidence, and is just plain fucking wrong–all of which have been expertly…
On Saturday I was lucky enough to take part in a demonstration against the new Hobby Lobby in Burbank. Because of the recent Supreme Court decision it was easy to find people who shared my ire. The protest was fucking amazing. There were readings of poems, chanting, and discussions with members of the community. We found overwhelming support, even from (most of) the religious community members who came to speak to us. I met some of my heroes, met new…
On MLK Day we can’t forget that there was a reason of injustice, violence, and hatred behind why he HAD to have a dream. Washing over that for our comfort cheapens his risk, his bravery, and his words. Me and my fellow white people need to be always listening and fighting the white power-structure. There is a reason why the dream is still a dream; when we refuse as a group to give up our power, other people suffer. …
I’ve been trying to stay out of the Republican nomination race, but I just have to say something. Transcript: Anchor: Uh, I-I know you personally, a little bit, and my impression of you I’ll share with the viewers is you are an incredibly nice guy; you’re very compassionate, you’re very caring, you look out for other people. When I talk to some of my friends who are gay and lesbian, they don’t understand that characterization of you, because they think…
I grew up in an area that many people deem to be, quote, “ghetto as fuck.” My high school was right across the street from a park notorious for drug deals, my freshman class’ count was over 1,000 while less than 600 of us made it to graduation day, etc. I have always noted post-High School that I was lucky to have the teachers that I did have; while none of them said it out loud, it was quite clear…
My politics are obviously not informed by faith (kind of difficult for that to be true when I don’t subscribe to any faith). But they are also not informed by my lack of faith; it would make no sense for my atheism to inform my politics beyond perhaps being one less thing to tell me how to think/feel/vote. Though I am a proud feminist, I am not informed by my feminism. People might point out- “aren’t you pro-choice? Isn’t this…
I just wanted to share this anecdote and picture with you guys. I was at Borders with my good friend, when we spotted a pad that had been written upon. Somebody had (quite artistically) drawn “I ♥ Sex” all over the page. In the corner of the page, we also saw that somebody had written “Jesus Christ is Lord! =)” My friend knew just what to do. “Jesus ♥ Sex, 2!” And this is why I love my friend.…
My friend warned me the other night that people may not be as kind to me as I am to them, especially regarding belief and a lack of belief. Last night I received two e-mails from a Facebook friend who happens to be quite conservative. The surprising thing about this is that we have never exchanged e-mails, and yet it was sent to my e-mail inbox, not my Facebook inbox, leading me to believe that she definitely wanted me to…
I do not keep it a secret that I am a particularly liberal person. I wouldn’t say that I know yet whether or not I am liberal or conservative on the issue of economics, but when it comes to social issues I am definitely a bleeding-heart liberal. Yesterday, I called in to a Conservative talk radio show that my father listens to. To be fair, the host prompted me- “call in if you think that the economy is headed in…
